Base Oil by Asian Organics

The refining process of mineral oils has seen significant advancements throughout the 20th century. To bring clarity and classification to base oils, the American Petroleum Institute (API) introduced a system in the early 1990s, dividing base oils into five groups. These categories help industries, manufacturers, and consumers understand the quality, refining methods, and performance characteristics of different base oils. At Asian Organics, we deliver a wide range of base oils that align with these global standards, ensuring both reliability and superior performance.

API Classification of Base Oils

Group I – Solvent-Refined Mineral Oils

Base oils in Group I are produced using solvent-refining or solvent-extraction technology. These oils represent the most basic form of mineral oil refinement. While they offer adequate lubrication for many traditional applications, they have limited oxidation stability and lower viscosity index compared to advanced groups.

Key Applications: Industrial lubricants, simple automotive oils, and applications where performance demands are moderate.

Group II – Hydrotreated Mineral Oils

Group II base oils are refined using hydrotreating or hydrogenation, a process where hydrogen gas is used to remove impurities and transform undesirable components such as aromatics into more stable hydrocarbon structures. These oils are purer than Group I, with better thermal and oxidation stability.

Key Benefits: Higher performance, longer oil life, and improved engine cleanliness.
Applications: Widely used in automotive lubricants and modern industrial oils.

Group III – Highly Refined Mineral Oils

The refining process for Group III base oils builds upon Group II technology but employs higher pressures and temperatures during hydrogenation. This more severe process converts nearly all unwanted components into stable hydrocarbons, creating oils that perform on par with some synthetic base oils.

Key Benefits: High viscosity index, excellent thermal stability, and wide operating temperature range.
Applications: Advanced automotive oils, high-performance lubricants, and premium industrial applications.

Group IV – Polyalphaolefins (PAO)

Group IV base oils consist solely of synthetic polyalphaolefins (PAOs). These are produced using a polymerization process involving ethylene gas, resulting in hydrocarbons with a highly controlled structure. PAOs are chemically similar to Group III oils but offer superior performance characteristics.

Advantages:

  • Excellent oxidation stability.

  • Wider temperature performance (high and low).

  • Higher viscosity index.

  • Lower volatility.

While PAOs have slight limitations in lubricity and additive solubility, their advantages make them a popular choice for applications requiring maximum performance.

Applications: High-temperature machinery, aviation, automotive racing engines, and extreme industrial environments.

Group V – All Other Synthetics

Group V includes all remaining base oils not covered in the first four groups. These are predominantly synthetics such as:

  • Polyolesters (POEs)

  • Diesters

  • Polyalkylene glycols (PAGs)

  • Silicones

  • Phosphate esters

These specialty oils offer unique properties like exceptional lubricity, biodegradability, or chemical resistance.

Applications: Niche industries including aviation, refrigeration, specialty lubricants, and environmentally friendly formulations.

Choosing the Right Base Oil with Asian Organics

When comparing these groups, it becomes evident that higher levels of refinement yield oils with superior oxidation stability, thermal resistance, and viscosity control. However, with increased refining, certain challenges such as additive solubility and biodegradability can arise.

At Asian Organics, we supply a full range of mineral and synthetic base oils, offering clients the flexibility to choose the right grade for their specific applications. Our experts ensure that customers not only get the right product but also the technical guidance to maximize efficiency and performance.

Base oil selection plays a critical role in determining the effectiveness of lubricants, greases, and industrial oils. With the API’s structured classification and Asian Organics’ expertise in sourcing and supplying high-quality base oils, industries can rely on dependable solutions that enhance performance and sustainability.
